Al-Bayyinah 98:1
“Those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists were not to be parted [from misbelief][1958] until there came to them clear evidence –”

Essence
Some beliefs are fused to us like bone to joint, and only a truth clear enough to see can pull us loose.
A reflection
Recited to a man who had once wavered
This surah has a famous moment attached to it. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report that the Prophet ﷺ said to Ubayy ibn Kaʿb: 'Allah has commanded me to recite to you Lam yakun alladhīna kafarū.' Ubayy asked, 'He named me to you?' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Yes.' And Ubayy wept.
It is a beautiful story on its own. A man learns that the Lord of the worlds has mentioned him by name. But the sources place it beside another story, and together they say more.
Sahih Muslim reports that Ubayy once heard two men in the mosque recite the Quran in ways different from how he had learned it. He took them to the Prophet ﷺ, who listened and approved both. Something shook in Ubayy at that moment, he says: a doubt worse than any he had known before Islam. The Prophet ﷺ saw it on his face and struck him on the chest. Ubayy broke into a sweat, he said, and felt as if he were looking at Allah in awe. Then the Prophet ﷺ explained that the Quran had been sent down to be recited in several modes, as a mercy.
One classical commentator suggests that this is why the Prophet ﷺ recited this surah to Ubayy. It was not to teach him something he did not know. It was to steady him, and strengthen his faith. And the surah chosen was the one that opens with 'the clear proof', and speaks of a messenger reciting purified pages.
Think about what that means. The man who once felt the ground move under his faith was the man Allah named. His wobble did not disqualify him. The surah about certainty was delivered, by name, to someone who knew what doubt felt like.
Many people carry a private memory of a moment when their faith shook. They assume it marks them as second-rate believers. Ubayy's story says otherwise. The one who shook, and was steadied, became the man to whom the Prophet ﷺ was commanded to recite.
