- Ayah 1Allah swears by horses running flat out, their breath rasping from the chest: a creature giving everything for the one who feeds it.
- Ayah 2The chargers strike the rock so hard that fire leaps from their hooves: effort that brings out what lay hidden in the stone.
- Ayah 3The chargers fall on the camp at first light, the hour when people sleep deepest and least expect anything to change.
- Ayah 4With the morning comes the dust: a cloud stirred up over the camp, the visible trace of a whole night's hidden effort.
- Ayah 5The chargers do not stop at the edge: wrapped in their own dust, they go straight into the heart of the gathered host.
- Ayah 6Here is the point of the whole oath: the horse gives everything to the one who feeds it, while the human being cuts off the thanks he owes his Lord.
- Ayah 7Our ingratitude is never unseen: Allah is present at every moment of it, and our own lives testify to it louder than our words deny it.
- Ayah 8The human heart settles on wealth like a kneeling camel that will not rise, strong and tireless for it, and tight-fisted because of it.
- Ayah 9The one who clings to wealth is asked a quiet question: does he not know that the graves will be turned upside down, and everything in them tipped out?
- Ayah 10On that Day what the chests have hidden is sifted out like gold from ore: every real intention gathered, separated and brought into the light.
- Ayah 11The surah that began with thundering hooves ends in stillness: their Lord knows them through and through, and on that Day His knowledge becomes their verdict.
