Al-'Adiyat 100:11
إِنَّ رَبَّهُم بِهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّخَبِيرٌۢ
“Indeed, their Lord with them, that Day, is [fully] Aware.[1973]”
Saheeh International
Essence
The surah that began with thundering hooves ends in stillness: their Lord knows them through and through, and on that Day His knowledge becomes their verdict.
A reflection
The expert who blanks
In the final of a televised quiz, a champion famous for his memory is asked a question he has answered a hundred times. The clock is running. The cameras are on his face. And for a long, terrible moment, the answer will not come. He finds it just as the buzzer goes. But afterwards he admits that he simply went blank when it mattered.
The surah ends with a single sentence about Allah: inna rabbahum bihim yawmaʾidhin la-khabīr. 'Truly their Lord, of them, on that Day, is fully aware.' Khabīr comes from a root that means knowing a thing from within, its inner reality and not only its surface. The lexicons tie it to knowing someone by testing him, and to news that reaches you. That sense is established. Al-Khabīr is the One who knows the inner state of everything.
One commentator notices something about the words 'on that Day'. On that Day, he says, there is no judge whose judgement carries except Him, and no scholar whose verdict holds except His. Then he adds a human comparison. How many scholars do not know the answer at the moment of need, and only remember it afterwards? It is as if Allah says: I am not like that.
That is where the ego shrinks. Our knowledge, however impressive, fails exactly when it is most needed. We forget, freeze, misjudge, or never knew. The quiz champion blanks. The expert misreads. The most careful of us misunderstands the people we love. His knowledge never fails, never lapses, never needs a moment to recall.
Why does He tell us this? Not because He needs our admiration; He is free of need. He tells us because justice depends on it. A judge who knows only the surface will wrong someone, however good his intentions. Only complete knowledge can give complete justice, and complete mercy. He knows the excuse no one else heard, the struggle no one saw, the good intention that never got its chance.
On that Day we will stand before the only Judge who will not go blank. For those who turned to Him, that is not a threat. It is relief.
