“And the earth discharges its burdens[1962]”
Saheeh International
Essence
The earth has been carrying everything we buried in it, bodies and gold alike, and one day she will set every load down in the open.
A reflection
The earth sets down her load
Athqāl, loads, is a word the first hearers used for things they carried. A thaqal was a traveller's baggage, the household packed onto camels for a journey. It was also anything heavy and precious kept with care. One source adds another sense of thiql: the weight a woman carries in her womb. The sources read the ayah with all of these in view. One says the earth will bring out the dead alive, as a mother gives birth to a living child.
The sources explain the load in two directions. When a person is inside the earth, buried, he is a weight for her. When he walks on her back, he is a weight upon her. Humans and jinn are even called al-thaqalān, 'the two weighty ones'. The earth carries us twice: once while we live on her, and again while we rest in her.
The first hearers knew this language from grief. A famous poet of the time mourned her brother with a line the sources quote. When he was buried, she said, the earth adorned her loads with him: he became an ornament among the people of the graves, so great was his honour. In their speech a noble man was a weight on the earth, and when he died, a weight fell from it.
Picture a cemetery on the edge of any town. Row after row of stones, some fresh, some leaning and worn smooth. It feels like an ending. The ayah sees it differently. It sees a pregnancy, a load being carried, a baggage train waiting to be unpacked. Every grave is something the earth is holding, not something she has swallowed.
That changes how a believer can stand at a grave. The person you buried is not lost in the soil. They are carried, as precious baggage is carried, until the day the earth sets every load down.
The verb is akhrajat, brought out. The earth that received quietly will give back openly. Nothing entrusted to her will be kept.
