Al-'Asr · Makki · ayah 1 of 3
Al-'Asr 103:1
وَٱلْعَصْرِ
“By time,[1985]”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah swears by the one thing you spend every second and can never buy back: time itself, slipping away like a late afternoon.
A reflection
The one thing no one owns
The surah opens with an oath: wa-l-ʿaṣr, by time. Of everything Allah could have named, He named the one thing no human being has ever owned.
Think of the richest person alive. They can buy the island, the jet, the best table in every restaurant. They cannot buy back last Tuesday. They cannot even rent tomorrow in advance. To Him belongs whatever dwells in the night and the day (6:13). The ayah just before that one speaks of the heavens and the earth. One classical reading pairs the two: the first is His ownership of place, the second His ownership of time. It judges time the nobler of the two, so an oath by time is an oath by the nobler half of His dominion.
The first hearers knew what an ʿaṣr does to people. An old Arabian poet stands before the worn-out traces of a camp and asks: can anyone who lived in the vanished ʿaṣr still be happy? Whoever laughed there is gone, and the age went with them.
Now look at what our pride is built on. The title, the savings, the reputation earned over twenty years, the looks we are quietly vain about. Every one of them exists only inside time, and time is not ours. Set them inside this oath and they look like that camp. The ego assumes a permanence it was never granted. The humble person has simply read the lease.
Why would God swear at all? Not because His word needs support. He is al-Ghanī, free of all need (35:15). The oath is for us. It takes the thing we waste most carelessly and holds it up to the light, as a signal that what follows matters. And while people are told to swear only by Allah, He swears by what He made, because its wonders point back to its Maker. Some early readers heard a hidden 'by the Lord of time' inside the oath itself.
So the first word of the surah quietly settles a question of rank. You are a tenant of your hours. The Owner has just spoken about them.
