Yusuf 12:62
“And [Joseph] said to his servants, "Put their merchandise[604] into their saddlebags so they might recognize it when they have gone back to their people that perhaps they will [again] return."”

Essence
He has the payment of the men who sold him slipped back into their saddles, where it can only be found once they are home.
A reflection
A gift built so that it could not be thanked
The familiar reading is that Yusuf returned their money as a kind gesture, or as a clever way to make sure they came back. Both are true as far as they go.
But look at how the gift is made.
He does not hand the money back. He does not announce a discount. He tells his servants to hide it, in the bags, where it will only be found once the brothers are home and unpacking.
One classical commentary lists ten possible reasons, and two of them go deeper than kindness. He wanted to do them good in a way that would bring them no shame and no sense of debt. And he wanted to answer the extremity of their wrong with an extremity of good.
A gift you hand to someone face to face puts them in your debt. They must say thank you. They must feel smaller, for a moment, in front of you.
A gift found later, at home, with no giver in sight, asks nothing of them at all.
Sahih al-Bukhari records the Prophet naming those Allah shades on the Day there is no other shade. Among them is one who gives so secretly that the left hand does not know what the right has spent.
A man settles his estranged sister's overdue nursery fees through the nursery office. He asks them never to say who paid. They have not spoken in three years. She will assume a grant came through.
He is not trying to win the argument. He just cannot bear her children to be sent home.
That is the shape of this ayah. Not a gift handed over, but a gift hidden, so that the men who sold him can receive it without bowing.
The silver lies at the bottom of the sack, waiting for them to reach home.
