Al-'Ankabut · Makki · ayah 37 of 69

Al-'Ankabut 29:37

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلرَّجْفَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ فِى دَارِهِمْ جَـٰثِمِينَ

“But they denied him, so the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone.”

Essence

Madyan's ending from 7:91 returns: they called him a liar, the quake took them, and morning found them pressed to the ground.

A reflection

You cannot call a command a lie

This ending repeats, almost word for word, the close of Madyan's story at 7:91, where it is drawn out more fully. What this telling adds is the ayah just before it. Shuʿayb's message here is all commands: serve Allah, hope for the Last Day, do not corrupt (29:36).

One classical commentator raises a sharp question. A command cannot be true or false. If someone says 'stand up', you cannot reply 'that's a lie'. So what did they deny?

His answer: behind every command lay a claim. Allah is one, so serve Him. The Gathering is real, so hope for it. Corruption is forbidden, so keep away. They called the claims lies, so they could ignore the commands.

That is still how refusal works. We rarely reject an instruction head-on. We quietly decide the fact beneath it is not really true.
