Al-'Ankabut 29:36

“And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shuʿayb, and he said, "O my people, worship Allāh and expect the Last Day and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."”

Essence

Shuʿayb gave traders three commands in one breath: serve Allah, live towards the Last Day, and stop corrupting the earth.

A reflection

Worship first, and the scales follow

Madyan's problem, the commentators report, was in the market. They gave short measure and short weight, and they robbed travellers on the roads. You might expect a reformer to start there, with the scales. Shuʿayb starts somewhere else. 'Serve Allah.' Only after that does he speak of corruption.

The order is not a preacher's habit. It is a diagnosis. Cheating at the scale is a symptom of a heart that believes it is on its own. If no one is providing for me, every gram matters. If my living is mine to snatch, then the margin I shave off is survival.

Worship moves the centre. A person who stands before Allah five times a day knows whose hand feeds him. The extra gram stops looking like safety.

Picture a man who runs a small removals firm. For years he padded his estimates, an extra hour here, a phantom second van there. Nobody checked. When he started praying properly, he did not make a resolution about invoices. He simply noticed, months later, that he had stopped. The fear that every job might be his last had gone quiet. He no longer needed the padding.

That is what this ayah offers, and it is for him, not for Allah. 'Whoever strives, strives only for himself; Allah is free of need of the worlds' (29:6), this same surah says. Allah gains nothing from Madyan's prayers. Madyan gains a heart that can finally rest. 'In the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest' (13:28).

So worship here is not a ritual set beside honest trade. It is the root of it. Many people today feel the same scarcity Madyan felt: never enough, never safe. The ayah's answer is not a tighter grip. It is turning the heart to the One who provides, and letting the hands loosen.
