Al-'Ankabut العنكبوت
Makki · 69 ayat · 69 with pondering
- Ayah 1Three letters sound like an alarm before the only Alif Lām Mīm surah that opens with a question, and the question is about you.
- Ayah 2Saying 'we believe' is a claim, and Allah does not leave a claim untested, because to be left untested would be to be left alone.
- Ayah 3Every generation of believers was tested, and through the test Allah brings into the open what He always knew: who was true, and who flinched.
- Ayah 4Right after warning believers that faith will be tested, the ayah turns to the other camp: do evildoers imagine they can outrun Us?
- Ayah 5Whoever hopes to meet Allah: His appointed time is surely coming, and He hears every word and knows what lies beneath it.
- Ayah 6Whoever strives strives only for his own soul; Allah is free of all need of the worlds and gains nothing from anyone's effort.
- Ayah 7Those who believe and do good are promised two things on oath: their bad deeds buried, and a reward measured by their best.
- Ayah 8Honour your parents with beauty in every dealing, and refuse them one thing only: following them into a partner with Allah that no knowledge supports.
- Ayah 9Whoever believes and keeps doing deeds that repair is promised more than a reward: Allah will bring them in among the righteous.
- Ayah 10Some borrow the believers' 'we' until harm comes, weigh people's pressure like Allah's punishment, then reclaim the 'we' at victory.
- Ayah 11Twice, with the force of an oath, Allah says He will make known who truly believes and who only wears belief's words.
- Ayah 12'Follow our way and we will carry your sins' is a guarantee no one can honour, and Allah names the people who offer it liars.
- Ayah 13Those who offered to carry others' sins lighten no one; they carry their own loads, more loads on top, and answer for the lie.
- Ayah 14Nuh stayed among his people a thousand years less fifty, and the flood took them only while they were still holding to their wrong.
- Ayah 15Allah saved Nuh and the people of the ship, and made what happened a sign for all the worlds.
- Ayah 16Ibrahim opens with an offer, not an attack: serve Allah, take Him as your shield, and see that this is for your own good.
- Ayah 17What people worship beside Allah is their own handiwork and owns nothing; all provision is with Him, so seek, serve and thank Him.
- Ayah 18Rejection is an old pattern, not a new verdict; the messenger owes a message that arrives, and the hearer owns his reply.
- Ayah 19Everyone has watched Allah begin creation, in themselves and around them; the One who began it will bring it back, easily.
- Ayah 20Go out and look at how creation began; the One who began it will bring about the second creation, for nothing is beyond Him.
- Ayah 21Punishment and mercy are His to give as He wills, justly and generously, and every one of us is being turned back to Him.
- Ayah 22No height or depth puts you beyond Allah's reach, and apart from Him there is no one to shelter you or fight for you.
- Ayah 23Whoever denies Allah's signs and the meeting with Him has cut himself off from the very mercy he most needs.
- Ayah 24With no answer to Ibrahim's proof, his people reached for fire; Allah brought him out of it whole, and believers read signs in that.
- Ayah 25Fresh from the fire, Ibrahim names what kept the idols standing: not proof but friendship, a friendship that will end in cursing.
- Ayah 26One man believed Ibrahim, and Ibrahim walked away from everything, carrying only this: my Lord is the Mighty, the Wise.
- Ayah 27The man who left with almost nothing was given a son, a grandson, prophets and scripture in his line, and a place among the righteous.
- Ayah 28Lut, the one man who believed Ibrahim, now stands alone before a people and names their deed plainly: a foulness no one had done before.
- Ayah 29Lut names a wrong that has spread from one act to the road and the meeting place; his people answer with a dare.
- Ayah 30Dared to bring a punishment he had no power over, Lut turns to his Lord with five words: help me against the people who spoil.
- Ayah 31Allah's envoys bring Ibrahim news of a son, and in the same visit news of a town about to end because its people did wrong.
- Ayah 32Told of the town's end, Ibrahim speaks first for Lut; the envoys answer that they know who is there, and will save his household.
- Ayah 33The envoys reach Lut, whose arms feel too short to shield them, and tell him not to fear or grieve: his household will be saved.
- Ayah 34The angels tell Lut that a shaking ruin is coming on his town, and name its cause, though his rescue came with none.
- Ayah 35Lut's rescue left no mark on the land, but the ruin did, and it was kept there plain for anyone who uses their mind.
- Ayah 36Shuʿayb gave traders three commands in one breath: serve Allah, live towards the Last Day, and stop corrupting the earth.
- Ayah 37Madyan's ending from 7:91 returns: they called him a liar, the quake took them, and morning found them pressed to the ground.
- Ayah 38ʿAd and Thamud could see clearly, yet Satan made their deeds look lovely and tilted them off the road; their empty homes still say so.
- Ayah 39A fortune, a throne and a minister met the same clear proofs, and all three stood tall on ground that could not hold them.
- Ayah 40Four endings, one verdict: Allah wronged none of them, because each had long been wronging himself.
- Ayah 41Everyone knows a web is flimsy; the ayah asks what you have woven to live inside, and calls it the frailest house there is.
- Ayah 42Allah knows exactly what people call on besides Him, and the ayah's own grammar can be read to name it: nothing at all.
- Ayah 43The Quran's parables are struck for everyone, yet only those who know Allah let them take hold and change how they live.
- Ayah 44Allah made the heavens and the earth in truth, firm and purposeful, so even when people reject Him, His creation keeps testifying to believers.
- Ayah 45Recite and pray: prayer keeps telling you no to what is ugly, and greater still is Allah's remembrance of you, under His sight.
- Ayah 46Argue about faith with Jews and Christians only in the finest way: start from the One God you share, and end in your own submission.
- Ayah 47This Book came down as the earlier ones did; some who held a scripture believed, some who held none believed, and denial needs knowing first.
- Ayah 48He had read no scripture and written no line before the Quran came, so the one honest foothold for doubt was removed in advance.
- Ayah 49Far from being borrowed, the Quran is clear signs living in the hearts of those given knowledge; only people who misplace the truth deny it.
- Ayah 50Asked for signs on demand, the Prophet answers that every sign belongs to Allah; his own task is only to warn clearly.
- Ayah 51Asked for a wonder to watch once, Allah points to the Book recited to them: a sign that never ends, and mercy for believers.
- Ayah 52Rejected, the Prophet ﷺ rests his case with Allah, who knows all in the heavens and earth; those who trust falsehood are the losers.
- Ayah 53They dared the Prophet ﷺ to hurry the punishment; only a named, appointed term holds it back, and it will come suddenly, unnoticed.
- Ayah 54They keep demanding the punishment, while Hell is already closing round the deniers on every side.
- Ayah 55The punishment they dared to come will cover them from above and below, and the deeds they kept doing will be served back to them.
- Ayah 56Allah calls the believers His own and reminds them the earth is His and wide: if one place blocks His worship, worship Him alone elsewhere.
- Ayah 57Said to believers afraid to leave home: death finds every soul wherever it stays, and then all return to Allah alone.
- Ayah 58Believers who worked righteousness, many of them uprooted, will be settled for ever in high chambers over rivers: an excellent wage for the workers.
- Ayah 59The workers promised high chambers are those who held firm through what they suffered and lean on their Lord for what is still to come.
- Ayah 60The creature that carries nothing for tomorrow is fed today, and you are named after it: the One who feeds both has heard your fear.
- Ayah 61They admit Allah made the heavens and harnessed the sun and moon, so why does anyone who says so still fear for bread?
- Ayah 62Allah alone widens and narrows provision, even for the same person in different seasons, and He knows exactly what each servant can carry.
- Ayah 63They admit Allah sends the rain that brings dead land to life; the believer turns that admission into praise, and lets it hold him back.
- Ayah 64This near life is diversion and play; the home still to come is life itself, at full stir, if only people knew.
- Ayah 65On board, they call on Allah alone; once He brings them to land, they set partners beside Him as if the sea never happened.
- Ayah 66The fuller entry for this line is at 16:55; here it closes the sea scene: ingratitude, brief enjoyment, and knowledge that comes late.
- Ayah 67Makkah was kept safe while raiders seized people all around it; how could anyone then trust the empty and deny the Giver?
- Ayah 68The fuller entry is at 39:32; here the ayah gives its verdict on the question before: trusting falsehood and denying truth.
- Ayah 69Push on the hard ground for Allah's sake, and He will open His own roads beneath you and be with you as you walk them.
