Al-Mujadila 58:16

ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ جُنَّةً فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ

“They took their [false] oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allāh, and for them is a humiliating punishment.”

Saheeh International

Essence

A shield meant to protect was used to block others' way instead, and ended up producing the very shame it was built to avoid.

A reflection

One root, an entire family of hiding

Junnah, shield, sits on a root the lexicons trace to one consistent idea: concealment. The same root gives janīn, the unborn child hidden in the womb; jinn, beings concealed from ordinary sight; janān, the heart, concealed within the chest; junūn, madness, because it veils the intellect; and jannah, the garden, a reward still hidden from view until it is finally reached. Every branch of this root circles back to the same picture: something covered, kept from being seen.

Choosing this particular word for what the oaths became is not incidental. An oath used honestly is meant to reveal something true with extra conviction. An oath used as junnah does the opposite: it covers, conceals, hides whatever is actually happening behind a convincing show of sincerity. The very word chosen for this misuse belongs to the same family as the hidden heart, the hidden child, the hidden spirit. Concealment is not simply what this oath happened to achieve. It is what the word itself was already built from.

This is worth noticing as a piece of language doing exactly what it names. A root about hiding was reached for to describe an oath used for hiding, and nothing about that choice looks accidental once the fuller family of the word is seen together. The deception was not only in the content of the oath. It was already present in the method, concealment reaching for a word whose every relative also means concealment.

Something true rarely needs to borrow from this particular family of words to describe itself. Concealment needing concealment to talk about itself is, in the end, simply concealment talking.

There is a wider lesson here about how deception tends to organise itself. It rarely invents a single isolated lie and stops. It builds a whole structure of related cover, one concealment supporting another, much the way this one root quietly supports an entire family of hidden things: a hidden heart behind a hidden motive, a hidden motive behind a hidden oath. Pull on any one thread in that family, and the whole structure of concealment it was built to serve tends to come with it.
