Al-Mujadila 58:19

“Satan has overcome them and made them forget the remembrance of Allāh. Those are the party of Satan. Unquestionably, the party of Satan - they will be the losers.”

Essence

What looked like belonging to a tight, loyal faction was actually losing the one thing that was never meant to be forgotten.

A reflection

Driven, not merely tempted

The lexicons link istaḥwadha to brisk, forceful handling, the same word family used for a driver who herds his animals hard and fast, overriding whatever direction they might otherwise have wandered in on their own. Istaḥwadha ʿalayhim, Satan took complete hold of them, is not a picture of a gentle suggestion idly accepted. It is a picture of being driven, steered with real force toward a destination not chosen by the one being moved.

This matters for how temptation is usually imagined. The more comfortable picture is a quiet whisper, easily ignored, requiring only a moment's discipline to brush aside. This ayah describes something that has already gone considerably further than that comfortable picture allows: not a suggestion still waiting to be accepted or refused, but a hand already firmly on the reins, directing movement that no longer feels like a series of separate choices at all.

This is worth taking seriously as a warning about how late it can already be by the time someone notices. The quiet whisper stage is the easy stage to resist. By the time a person has been thoroughly driven, the sense of still choosing freely has usually already faded, replaced by something that simply feels like momentum, already well underway before anyone thought to ask where it was actually heading.

The word chosen here does not describe a fork in the road still waiting to be taken. It describes someone already being driven down one, at a pace no longer fully their own.

This is also why the remedy worth building is not a single dramatic refusal offered once the driving has already begun in earnest. It is attention paid far earlier, back at the stage of the quiet suggestion, while the reins are still genuinely in hand and refusing them still costs very little.
