Al-Muddaththir 74:37
لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ
“To whoever wills among you to proceed[1794] or stay behind.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The warning just given splits into two directions only: whoever among you wills to step forward, or to step back.
A reflection
Stepping forward or back, not standing still
This is the nearest relative in the Quran of 81:28's liman shāʾa minkum an yastaqīm, for whoever among you wills to go straight, and that fuller treatment is the place to go for the deeper meaning of being offered a real choice before a true warning. Worth saying plainly here is what differs, because the two ayat are not simply repeating themselves.
At-Takwir's ayah asks for a posture: to stand upright rather than crooked. This ayah asks about direction: to step forward or to step back. The grammarians read it as a direct continuation of the ayah just before it, a warning to mankind (74:36): this is exactly which mankind is meant, those who will take that warning and move towards it, or take it and retreat from it. There is no third option offered, no permission to simply stay where you already are. Hearing a warning this serious and doing nothing with it is itself a kind of taʾakhkhur, a falling back, dressed up as neutrality.
The surah has already shown exactly what stepping back looks like in a real, named life. Twelve ayat earlier, a man who had privately felt the Quran's power adbara, turned his back, in order to protect his own standing (74:23). This ayah is the quiet general rule standing behind that one specific, costly choice: everyone who hears this warning will either step towards it, as the Companions around the Prophet ﷺ did, or step back from it, as that one man chose to. The warning does not leave a third lane for staying exactly as you were.
