كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ
“As if they were alarmed donkeys”
Saheeh International
Essence
As if they were donkeys, startled into bolting: the most familiar, domesticated animal suddenly reverting to raw, unreasoning panic.
A reflection
The animal that carries what it does not understand
The donkey, in the lexicons, is simply the most familiar animal in the yard: loud, laden, present in nearly every household, carrying whatever is placed on its back without any grasp of what the load actually is. The Quran reaches for this exact image elsewhere, far more bluntly: those given the Torah and failing to uphold it are compared to a donkey carrying books (62:5), hauling something precious on its back while utterly unable to read a word of it.
This ayah draws on the same association. The comparison is not really about intelligence in any biological sense. It is about a particular, specific failure: carrying something valuable, being right next to it, close enough to feel its weight, while never once actually comprehending what it is. A reminder was placed within reach of these people in the most direct way a message can be delivered, recited aloud, explained, argued over in the open square, and still it rode on their backs the way a book rides on a donkey's, present and entirely unread.
A warehouse worker spends a decade moving boxes labelled with a company's own safety manuals from one shelf to another, never once opening a single one, confident he already understands enough of the job without reading the thing he physically handles every single day. Proximity to something is not the same as engagement with it, however many times a person's hands actually touch it.
This ayah's donkey is not an insult aimed at intelligence. It is a precise description of carrying truth everywhere except into actual understanding.
The discomfort of the image is, in a sense, the entire point. A gentler comparison, something merely sleepy or inattentive, would have let the behaviour pass as a minor, forgivable oversight. This one does not allow that comfort. It insists that proximity without engagement, carried for years, close enough to touch every single day, is not a small or neutral failing at all.
