Makki · 22 ayat · 22 with pondering
- Ayah 1Before it shows you a burning trench, the surah lifts your eyes to a sky of towers no tyrant built and no fire can reach.
- Ayah 2The Day is not a guess but a promise, already fixed by the One who never breaks His word.
- Ayah 3He swears by every witness and everything witnessed, in a surah where men sat watching cruelty: nothing done anywhere goes unseen.
- Ayah 4A king dug a trench to bury a faith; the Quran names him after his pit, curses him, and never records his victory.
- Ayah 5It was no small fire: it owned its fuel, and cruelty on that scale always needs many hands to bring the wood.
- Ayah 6The most chilling word here is not 'fire' but 'sitting': they watched believers burn from a comfortable seat.
- Ayah 7They were witnesses to their own crime, performing it for one another, and one day their own limbs will be called to testify.
- Ayah 8The only charge against them was faith in the Mighty, the Praiseworthy: which means the persecutors had already lost the argument.
- Ayah 9The king owned streets, soldiers and boats; the One the believers trusted owns the heavens and the earth, and saw every moment.
- Ayah 10They burned His believers, and still the verdict waits on one clause, 'then did not repent': a door left open even for them.
- Ayah 11The believers burned in the trench are promised shade and running water, in the Quran's only 'great triumph'.
- Ayah 12The sky, the promised Day and every witness were called to vouch for one sentence: your Lord's grip, on those who crush others, is severe.
- Ayah 13The king could only end lives; the Lord of this ayah begins everything that begins and brings back everything that returns.
- Ayah 14The Lord whose grip is severe names Himself next the Forgiving, the Loving: He covers the sin, then loves the one who returns.
- Ayah 15Every throne a tyrant sits on can topple; the Owner of the Throne is the Glorious, whose fullness overflows as good.
- Ayah 16We want far more than we can do; He alone does whatever He wills, and the One who wills is the Forgiving, the Loving.
- Ayah 17The armies that massed against the prophets are now only a story, and the ayah asks whether that story has reached you.
- Ayah 18Two names stand for every age of persecution: Pharaoh with his state and army, Thamūd with their carved mountains, and neither power saved its owners.
- Ayah 19The stories reached them and the ruins stood before them; the problem was never missing news, but a denial they lived inside like water.
- Ayah 20The persecutors sat facing the fire with Allah out of mind behind them, and He was there, encompassing them like a wall with no gap.
- Ayah 21Against every denial, one word turns the surah: rather, this is a Glorious Quran, from a glorious Lord whose Throne is glorious too.
- Ayah 22The king controlled the story in his day; the surah ends with the only record that cannot be edited, kept in a Tablet preserved.
