Al-Buruj 85:17
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْجُنُودِ
“Has there reached you the story of the soldiers -”
Saheeh International
Essence
The armies that massed against the prophets are now only a story, and the ayah asks whether that story has reached you.
A reflection
History as a leader's medicine
The question is addressed to the Prophet ﷺ. It came when his followers in Makkah were being beaten, starved and mocked, and he could not stop it. Hal atāka ḥadīthu al-junūd: has the story of the armies reached you?
The classical commentators hear the question as an answer. It has reached you, one explains. So bear your people's harm patiently, as the messengers before you did, and let nothing turn you from delivering My message. Another says simply that it was sent to comfort and console him. A third draws the widest conclusion. The state of believers facing those who reject them runs along the same road in every age.
That is a particular way of strengthening a leader. It does not deny the opposition. It does not promise that the pressure will stop tomorrow. It hands him a pattern, and places his hardest days inside it.
A union representative is walking into a meeting she expects to lose. The management side has the lawyers and the numbers. The night before, she reads the minutes of a dispute from forty years ago, in the same factory. The workers then were fewer, poorer and just as frightened, and they held their ground. She walks in the next morning no less outnumbered, but steadier. She is not the first.
Leaders under siege need exactly this: memory. Panic says that what is happening now has never happened before and can never end. History says otherwise. The Quran gives the Prophet ﷺ, and every believer after him, a long memory on purpose.
Notice the verb as well. The story 'reaches' you: atāka. Stories travel. They cross centuries and arrive at a particular person on a particular night, just when they are needed. The armies of Pharaoh and Thamūd were gone long before Makkah. Their story arrived in time.
If you are leading anything under pressure, a family, a team, a small community, borrow this method. Remind the people with you of those who came through before. Name the pattern honestly. Then refuse to let the fear of this week set the pace.
