Al-Buruj 85:16
فَعَّالٌ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ
“Effecter of what He intends.”
Saheeh International
Essence
We want far more than we can do; He alone does whatever He wills, and the One who wills is the Forgiving, the Loving.
A reflection
Wanting and doing, never apart
Yurīd, He wills, comes from a root with a picture inside it. The rāʾid was the scout a tribe sent ahead to find pasture and rain-fed ground. A proverb said the scout does not lie to his people, since their lives hang on his report. From that riding out in search comes irāda: wanting, intending. Every wanting sends us somewhere.
For us, the search often comes back empty. A student maps her revision timetable to the half-hour, colour-coded and pinned above her desk. A week before her exams she comes down with glandular fever, and the timetable stays on the wall. She wanted, and planned, and could not do.
One classical scholar draws the contrast exactly. A created being wants what it does not do, and does what it does not want. Allah's will and His act are never apart. What He wills to do, He does; and whatever He does, He willed. So there is no one who does whatever he wills, he concludes, except Allah alone.
The word faʿʿāl adds weight. It is an intensive pattern: doing again and again, without limit. One commentator explains why the ayah uses it. What He wills and does is beyond counting.
Now look at the king in this surah. He wanted a boy dead and failed on a mountain and at sea. He wanted a faith extinguished, and a whole crowd cried out that they believed in the Lord of the boy. He had soldiers, boats and fire, and he still could not do what he willed.
Is it pride for Allah to announce this? Pride is a lie told by a creature claiming power it lacks. For Allah, the words are simply accurate, and He gains nothing by our hearing them. We are the ones who gain. The ego assumes it authors its outcomes. This ayah quietly notes that we cannot even do what we want for ourselves.
That is humbling, and it is also a relief. You can stop pretending to be in control of everything, and start asking the One who is.
