Makki · 25 ayat · 25 with pondering
- Ayah 1The oldest roof there is, which no one built and no one repairs, gives way like split firewood at a word from its Lord.
- Ayah 2The sky gave its Lord its whole ear and yielded at once, as was only fitting; we are the creatures who hear and then argue.
- Ayah 3The earth is pulled taut like a hide on a frame, every hill and tower pressed flat, until no one has a landmark left.
- Ayah 4The earth, which swallowed every grave and every hidden hoard, hands them all back and strains to be empty, keeping nothing of its own.
- Ayah 5The ground we dig, pave and boast of standing on gives its Lord its ear and hands back everything, as was its due.
- Ayah 6Every life is labour that leaves its marks on the labourer, and every hour of it is travelling to one meeting.
- Ayah 7The record that reaches the right hand was written by someone who always expected it to be read.
- Ayah 8The easy reckoning is not a search through every line but a private showing, a covering, and a pardon.
- Ayah 9After the easy reckoning comes the homecoming: turning back to your own people with a joy that has nothing left to fear.
- Ayah 10Some receive their record from behind their backs, the very place where they kept the Book of Allah all their lives.
- Ayah 11A man who never called on his Lord finally calls out, and what he calls for is his own ruin.
- Ayah 12The same root that pictures warming your hands at a fire here pictures a man held inside one that is kept blazing.
- Ayah 13His joy was real, and it was spent in the one place and time where it could not last.
- Ayah 14One unexamined assumption, that he would never be called back, quietly ran his whole life.
- Ayah 15One word, 'Yes indeed', overturns a lifetime's 'never', because his Lord had been seeing him, and understanding him, all along.
- Ayah 16To the man who said 'I will never return', Allah answers 'No', and swears by the thin light in which every day returns.
- Ayah 17Allah swears by the night and all it gathers in, folds over and carries: every creature, every secret, and every prayer said in the dark.
- Ayah 18Allah swears by the moon at the moment its light is gathered full, a fullness that was built night by night and will not last.
- Ayah 19Like the sky and the moon, you will be carried from stage to stage, and each stage leads on to the next.
- Ayah 20After the sky, the earth, the reckoning and the oaths, one question: what is holding them back from resting their trust in Allah?
- Ayah 21The Quran is recited to them, gathered words that should bring the heart and the forehead down, and nothing in them bows.
- Ayah 22The problem was never a lack of signs: those who cover the truth keep on calling it a lie.
- Ayah 23Every heart is a container, packed with what it keeps; Allah knows its contents better than the one who packed it.
- Ayah 24The word for news that lights up a face is used, with bitter irony, for a pain that takes every sweetness away.
- Ayah 25The final ayah opens with 'except': for those who believe and set things right, a reward never cut off, reduced or held over them.
