“By the fig and the olive[1947]”
Saheeh International
Essence
The Lord of all things opens a surah by swearing on a fig and an olive, and the humblest things on your table become witnesses.
A reflection
An oath you could eat
At a kitchen table, a grandmother splits a ripe fig with her thumbs for her grandson. A bead of white sap gathers on the stem. Inside, the flesh is red and full of tiny seeds. He eats it in two bites and reaches for another, without a thought.
One classical commentator raised the obvious question. The fig and the olive are not among the grand things of creation, he wrote. How could Allah swear by them? Another surah opens with the sun, the moon and the sky. This one opens with a breakfast. The commentators answered in several ways, and every answer turns the eye back to the table. The fig is fruit, food and medicine at once, they noted. The olive is fruit, relish and lamp-oil. One said He singled them out among fruit trees because both are wonders.
That is a quiet challenge to the ego. We tend to keep our awe for the impressive: the summit, the skyscraper, the famous name. Pride likes large things because it hopes to borrow some of their size. Allah begins this surah by pointing at something small enough to hold between thumb and finger, and swearing by it. Greatness, the oath says, was never about size. It is about Who made the thing.
Does Allah need oaths, or our admiration of His fruit? He needs neither. One classical scholar explains that Allah swears by His signs because they point to His lordship. The oath is a finger pointing, for our benefit, at what we have stopped seeing. The fig gains nothing from being sworn by, and neither does its Maker. The grandson gains everything, if one day he looks at the fig in his hand and asks who made it so sweet.
