Ash-Shu'ara 26:143

إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ

“Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Salih tells the people who once pinned their hopes on him that he is a messenger sent for them, faithful to what he carries.

A reflection

The man they had hoped would be theirs

Nuh, Hud, Salih, Lut and Shuʿayb all say this sentence in this surah. Its full treatment, including the picture inside amīn, lives at 26:107. Here it is enough to notice what Salih's people said back to him in another surah.

'Salih, you were among us one on whom hopes were placed before this' (11:62). They had marked him out. Perhaps a future elder, perhaps the one who would speak for them. His reliability was exactly what they had counted on.

Then the reliable man turned out to be faithful to Someone else. He would carry Allah's message exactly as he received it. And their hope in him collapsed into disappointment.
