Ash-Shu'ara 26:144

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

“So fear Allāh and obey me.”

Essence

To a comfortable, skilled people who lacked nothing, Salih says: guard yourselves with Allah, and follow me in what I bring from Him.

A reflection

A command for the people who had everything

Thamud were not a desperate people looking for rescue. In the next few ayat Salih lists what they had. Safety, gardens, springs, fields, palms heavy with fruit, and homes carved into the mountains (26:146-149). If anyone could say they needed nothing, it was them.

That is exactly who receives this command. Guard yourselves with Allah, and follow me.

A man finally moves into the house on the hill he has worked twenty years for. The view is everything the brochure promised. On the third night he wakes at four and lies looking at the ceiling. The mortgage is paid off, the children are well, the garden is finished. And he hears himself ask, quite calmly, what it is all for.

That question is not a malfunction. It is the gap the command was made to fill. Allah does not need Thamud's mindfulness or their obedience. He wants no provision from His creation and no food from them (51:57). The benefit runs one way only. It is the human heart that finds rest in His remembrance (13:28), and nothing else quite closes the gap.

Comfort can hide that gap for years. A full diary, a good holiday, a new project. Then a sleepless night opens it again. Thamud filled it with carving and planting. Salih offered them what the carving could not give: a life lived towards the One who gave the mountain in the first place.

If you have most of what you once wanted and still wake at four, this ayah is speaking to you. The obedience it asks for is not one more thing to own. It is the thing that makes the rest make sense.

Try it tonight in the smallest way. Before sleep, thank Him for three specific things you own, by name. Then ask Him what they are for.
