Al-'Ankabut · Makki · ayah 28 of 69

Al-'Ankabut 29:28

“And [mention] Lot, when he said to his people, "Indeed, you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds.”

Essence

Lut, the one man who believed Ibrahim, now stands alone before a people and names their deed plainly: a foulness no one had done before.

A reflection

The one who believed now has to speak

This sentence first appears almost word for word at 7:80, which carries the full entry. Here it has its own setting. Two ayat ago, Lut was the one man who believed Ibrahim and walked out with him (29:26). Now he is on his own, sent to a people among whom he settled.

The follower has become the messenger. The commentators note that Lut's call here skips the summons to worship Allah alone. Ibrahim had already made that call, and Lut carried it. What is told of Lut is what was particular to his mission: forbidding this deed.

There is a lesson in that sequence for anyone who has been the student. One day you are the one beside the teacher. Then you are the one in the room, and nobody else is going to say it.
