A reflection
Nobody sets out to be ungrateful
This line appears almost word for word at 16:55, where its fuller entry lives, and again at 30:34.
Here it finishes the sea scene. The rescued reach land and return to partners, 'so that they deny what We gave them'. One commentator calls this the particle of outcome. Nobody on that shore planned to be ungrateful. They simply resumed their lives, and ingratitude is where that road ended. From the side of Allah's decree, he adds, it is also purpose.
He compares Pharaoh's household, who lifted the baby Musa from the river 'to be an enemy and a grief to them' (28:8). They wanted a son. They got an outcome they never intended.
That is how most ingratitude happens. Nobody decides on it. A rescue goes unmentioned for a week, then a month, until forgetting has hardened into a stance. Ask where your own road is ending, not only where you meant it to go.
