Al-'Ankabut · Makki · ayah 67 of 69
Al-'Ankabut 29:67
“Have they not seen that We made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away[1135] all around them? Then in falsehood do they believe, and in the favor of Allāh they disbelieve?”
Saheeh International
Essence
Makkah was kept safe while raiders seized people all around it; how could anyone then trust the empty and deny the Giver?
A reflection
Few in number, and never raided
The ayah opens with a question the listeners could check from their own doorsteps. 'Have they not seen that We made a safe sanctuary?'
One commentator spells out what they saw. The Arab tribes around Makkah raided one another constantly. They took captives and drove off herds. Yet the people of Makkah stayed settled and safe. They were not raided, though they were few and the Arabs were many.
That detail matters. Their safety did not come from numbers, walls or skill in war. They had little of any of these. 'We made' it, the ayah says. The sanctuary was a gift laid over a small town in a violent land.
Picture the chief executive of a mid-sized company that survived a hard recession. Three larger rivals collapsed that year. At the annual dinner he speaks about his discipline and his instincts. He does not mention that his biggest client was the one customer whose orders never fell. He did not arrange that client's fortune. He received it.
Our egos are built to take credit for safety. If the house was spared, we chose the right street. If the job survived, we were indispensable. The ayah strips that pride gently. It points to the fact that you were spared while others like you were not. Then it asks who did it.
A fair objection: does Allah list His favours because He wants to be thanked? He needs nothing from anyone. 'If you deny, you and everyone on earth together, Allah is Free of need, Praiseworthy' (14:8). The reminder is for the listener. Whoever knows where safety came from will turn to the same place when it is threatened.
Humility here is not self-dislike. It is accuracy, getting the credits right.
