Ya-Sin · Makki · ayah 83 of 83
Ya-Sin 36:83
فَسُبْحَـٰنَ ٱلَّذِى بِيَدِهِۦ مَلَكُوتُ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ
“So exalted is He in whose hand is the realm of all things, and to Him you will be returned.”
Saheeh International
Essence
After every argument the surah ends in praise, not threat: the keys of everything are in His hand, and every road leads to Him.
A reflection
The keys of everything, in one hand
Picture the head porter of an old hospital. On his belt hangs a heavy ring of keys: wards, stores, the boiler room, the chapel, the mortuary. Every door in the building is somewhere on that ring. Doctors come and go, managers change, but when a door must be opened at three in the morning, everyone calls him. He holds the keys.
This ayah closes Ya-Sin with a picture like that, on a scale no building can hold. So glory be to the One in whose hand is the dominion of every thing, and to Him you will be returned.
The word malakūt, dominion, is an intensive form. One concise commentary notes that letters were added to the word for kingdom to strengthen it: complete, absolute sovereignty. An early authority glossed it in a single phrase: the keys of every thing. Another commentary repeats it: in His hand are the keys of all things.
The majesty of this ending lands squarely on human pride, and on one of its most persistent forms: the wish to hold the keys ourselves. People want to control their health, their children's futures, their reputation, their work. They collect what keys they can and grip them tightly.
The ayah does not tell anyone to stop locking their door. It tells them who holds the master ring. Every door in creation, life and death, provision and loss, the grave and what comes after, is on one ring in one hand.
That is not a threat. It is the most restful sentence in the surah. You do not have to hold everything. Someone already does.
