As-Saffat 37:29
قَالُوا۟ بَل لَّمْ تَكُونُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ
“They [i.e., the oppressors] will say, "Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers,”
Saheeh International
Essence
The leaders' first defence is a true sentence used as a shield: you were never believers, so we cannot have taken your faith away.
A reflection
You were never a good fit anyway
A start-up runs out of money. The founder, who promised everyone equity and a mission, calls the staff in one by one. To each he says something like: honestly, you were never really a culture fit. They walk out wondering whether the collapse was their fault. It was not. He has simply found a sentence that moves the blame.
The leaders in this ayah do the same thing. The followers have just accused them: you came at us from the right. The leaders reply with one word of reversal, bal: rather. Rather, you were not believers. You were never on the road for us to push you off it.
The commentaries spell out the logic. To mislead someone, you must first find them on the right path and then turn them away. If you never had faith, they say, we cannot be blamed for removing it. The disbelief came from your side.
This is a classic leadership failure, and it appears in every age. When things go wrong, the leader redefines the people. They were lazy, uncommitted, never really with us. It is always easier to change the description of the followers than to examine what you told them.
The Quran records this defence without endorsing it. A few ayat later, it places leaders and followers in the same punishment (37:33). The deflection does not work.
If you lead anyone, notice the reflex in yourself. When your team, your family or your class fails, what is the first sentence you reach for? If it begins with what they were never willing to do, pause. Ask what you were never willing to say, show or fix. Good leadership starts its post-mortem with the word I.
