As-Saffat 37:49
كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَيْضٌ مَّكْنُونٌ
“As if they were [delicate] eggs, well-protected.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The desert's most guarded treasure was an egg kept under a mother's feathers, and the ayah reaches for it to say: precious, protected, untouched.
A reflection
An egg under the ostrich's feathers
Anyone who has carried a newly laid egg from a hen house knows how you walk. Hands cupped, eyes down, slower than usual. The egg is warm, clean and absurdly easy to break. You carry it as if it were the only one.
The first hearers had a grander version of that picture. Most commentators say the eggs meant here are ostrich eggs. The ostrich scrapes a hollow in the sand and lays them there. Then she covers them with her feathers against the wind and the dust. The shell stays clean. Its colour is white with a faint touch of yellow, and it seems to shine. Of all eggs, one commentary notes, it was the loveliest to look at and the furthest from any hand.
The Arabs used this image as their highest praise. They called sheltered, well-born women bayḍāt al-khudūr, eggs of the curtained chamber. The most celebrated pre-Islamic poet uses exactly that phrase in one of his best-known lines. So when this ayah says ka-annahunna bayḍun maknūnun, the first hearers did not hear something odd. They heard their own finest compliment, raised to a new height.
The second word completes it. Maknūn comes from a root that means covering in order to guard. A kinn was a shelter against heat and cold. One work on near-synonyms insists that the verb means to guard, not merely to hide.
Put together, the image has three parts, and every one of them is established in the sources. Something precious. Something fragile. Something kept safe by someone who cared. That is a description of honour, not of a possession.
