As-Saffat 37:53

أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَدِينُونَ

“That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed?'"”

Essence

The deniers earlier in the surah asked whether they would be raised; the companion asks something sharper: whether anyone will ever settle the account.

A reflection

One word changed: raised, or repaid

This sentence nearly repeats one heard earlier in the surah. At 37:16 the deniers ask: when we have died and become dust and bones, will we really be mabʿūthūn, raised? The same question appears in Al-Muʾminūn (23:82) and Al-Wāqiʿah (56:47), always ending in that word. The fuller treatment of the question belongs to its first appearance.

Here, only the last word changes, and it changes everything. The companion asks: will we really be madīnūn? The commentaries gloss it as held to account and repaid for our deeds. Of the passages in this pattern, only this one ends that way.

The earlier denial was about whether the body could return. This one is about whether anyone will ever weigh what the body did. It is the more revealing doubt. A man can argue about biology. When he mocks the idea of a reckoning, he is usually defending the way he lives.
