As-Saffat 37:57

وَلَوْلَا نِعْمَةُ رَبِّى لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْضَرِينَ

“If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell].”

Saheeh International

Essence

At the summit of his reward, he takes no credit at all: only his Lord's favour stood between him and the Fire.

A reflection

Not my cleverness

A fisherman is pulled from the sea after his boat capsizes in a storm. On the quay, a reporter asks how he survived. Did he swim for it? Did he know a trick? He shakes his head and points at the lifeboat crew: they came for me. That is the whole of his answer.

The man in this ayah is in the Garden. He has just looked at his old friend in the middle of the Fire. He has every reason to feel he got it right. He resisted years of mockery. He held on to faith in the resurrection when it was socially costly. If anyone has earned a moment of pride, it is him.

And he takes none. Wa-lawlā niʿmatu rabbī: were it not for the favour of my Lord, I would have been among those brought to the Fire. The commentaries spell out the favour: His guidance to faith, His protection, His help to hold on. One quotes the people of the Garden from another surah: we would never have been guided had Allah not guided us (7:43).

The ego loves a success story with itself as the hero. I saw through it. I was strong. I made the right call. This ayah dismantles that story at the very moment it would be most tempting to tell it.

Sahih al-Bukhari records that the Prophet ﷺ said no one's deeds will admit him to the Garden. Not even you? they asked. Not even me, he said, unless Allah covers me with His favour and mercy.

Someone might ask whether Allah needs this acknowledgement. He does not. He is free of all need (35:15). The acknowledgement is for us. A person who knows he was carried does not become arrogant towards those who fell. He becomes humble, and grateful, and kind.
