Ghafir 40:80
“And for you therein are [other] benefits and that you may realize upon them a need which is in your breasts;[1379] and upon them and upon ships you are carried.”

Essence
Animals bring countless benefits and carry the needs of your hearts to distant places; on them and on ships, you are carried.
A reflection
A need carried in the chest
Wa-li-tablughū ʿalayhā ḥājatan fī ṣudūrikum. And that you may reach on them a need that is in your chests.
The phrase is unusual. It does not say: reach a place. It says: reach a need that is in your chests. The journey begins inside.
The root of ḥāja, need, has a strong picture in the lexicons. Being driven to a thing you cannot do without. One lexicon says that is the root's single sense. This is established. And ṣudūr, chests, is where the lexicons place the inner life: the heart with its thoughts, desires, fears and hopes.
The commentaries give the practical side. A concise commentary says: carrying loads to other lands. A modern commentary: reaching distant regions. A later commentary: any matter of importance you care about.
But the wording lets us see something deeper. Every journey that matters starts as a need lodged in the chest. A longing to see someone. A duty to fulfil. A hope to pursue. The animals, and later the ships, carried that need across distances people could not cross alone.
A young man saves for two years from a warehouse job to fly to his grandmother's village. He has not seen her since he was a child. She is very old now. The need has sat in his chest for years: to sit with her once more and hear her voice. When he finally arrives, she holds his face in both hands and does not speak for a long time.
The plane carried him. The need carried the plane.
The ayah honours this. It counts among Allah's gifts not just transport, but the fulfilment of heart's needs that transport makes possible.
It is worth asking what needs sit in your own chest. Which of them are worth a journey? And who, by Allah's gift, could carry you there?
