Makki · 85 ayat · 85 with pondering
- Ayah 1Two letter-names open the first of seven sister surahs: a sound the first Muslims loved, named, and used as a watchword.
- Ayah 2Before a single command, the Book states where it comes from: from the One no hand can reach and nothing escapes.
- Ayah 3He introduces Himself first as the One who forgives sin and accepts return, and only then as severe in punishment, with generosity close behind.
- Ayah 4Arguing to topple Allah's signs is the mark of denial, and the busy, prosperous movement of those who do it proves nothing.
- Ayah 5Nation after nation reached out to seize its messenger and argued to make the truth slip, and each was itself seized.
- Ayah 6As it came true for the nations before, your Lord's word comes true for those who deny: they are the Fire's companions.
- Ayah 7The angels nearest the Throne give their praise to their Lord and their prayers to you: forgive those who turned.
- Ayah 8The angels ask not only that you enter the gardens of staying, but that those you love who were righteous enter with you.
- Ayah 9The angels end their prayer by defining triumph: to be shielded from every evil on that Day is already to have received His mercy.
- Ayah 10In the Fire they finally loathe themselves, and are told: Allah's loathing was greater, each time you were invited to believe and refused.
- Ayah 11Too late, they recite their whole existence in four beats, confess, and ask for any way out at all.
- Ayah 12Allah alone made them uneasy; partners beside Him put them at ease, so the verdict now belongs to the Most High, the Most Great.
- Ayah 13He keeps showing His signs and sending provision from the sky, yet only the one who keeps coming back to Him truly remembers.
- Ayah 14Call on Allah with a devotion cleared of every other claim, and keep calling even when those who reject Him resent it.
- Ayah 15The One above every rank casts a living spirit of revelation onto chosen servants, so that people are warned of the Day everyone meets.
- Ayah 16On the Day everyone stands in the open with nothing hidden, the question of who holds dominion has one answer: Allah, the One, the Prevailing.
- Ayah 17That Day every soul is paid exactly what it earned, nothing is put out of place, and the reckoning of all creation is swift.
- Ayah 18Warn them of the Day already near, when hearts lodge in throats and wrongdoers find no close friend and no one to plead for them.
- Ayah 19He knows the glance stolen when no one is looking, and the thought that never reaches the face.
- Ayah 20Allah judges with truth, the things people call on besides Him cannot judge anything at all, and He alone hears and sees.
- Ayah 21Travel and look: nations stronger than you, who left deeper marks on the earth, were taken for their sins, and nothing shielded them from Allah.
- Ayah 22Messenger after messenger came with proofs as plain as dawn, they refused, and the Strong, severe in punishment, took them.
- Ayah 23The surah turns from nations in general to one story in detail: Musa, sent with signs and a clear authority that left no excuse.
- Ayah 24Musa was sent to the king, his minister and the richest man of the age; all three answered clear proofs with two labels.
- Ayah 25Faced with the truth, Pharaoh's court reached again for its oldest cruelty, and before the threat is even finished, Allah declares the plot already lost.
- Ayah 26Pharaoh asks to be let loose on Musa, mocks his prayer, and dresses his fear as concern for the people's religion and the land's order.
- Ayah 27Threatened with death, Musa makes no threat back: he runs to his Lord and theirs from every arrogant denier of the reckoning.
- Ayah 28A man who had kept his faith silent as a cloud without thunder spoke at last, opening with a question the court could not answer.
- Ayah 29He reminds the powerful that their kingdom has a today, counts himself in its danger, and Pharaoh answers with every autocrat's favourite line.
- Ayah 30No longer called the one hiding his faith, he is now simply the one who believed, and he fears for the people threatening him.
- Ayah 31Ruin reached those nations along a track they wore themselves, and the Allah who ended them did not even want injustice for His servants.
- Ayah 32He warns a court full of connections about a Day when everyone will be calling someone, and no title or family name will answer.
- Ayah 33On that Day backs turn to flee and no hand holds fast, and the only guide is the One whose guidance was refused.
- Ayah 34They doubted Yusuf every day he lived, and the day he died they bolted the door behind him: Allah will never send anyone again.
- Ayah 35Arguing against Allah's signs with no proof is loathed in heaven and on earth, and the arrogant heart is finally stamped with its own shape.
- Ayah 36Answered with plain truth he could not refute, Pharaoh ordered a tower: something tall enough to look like an answer.
- Ayah 37Pharaoh reached for ropes into the sky and called the truthful man a liar, while his own ugly work looked beautiful to him.
- Ayah 38The believer took back Pharaoh's stolen words, the path of right guidance, and offered them as a road rather than a slogan.
- Ayah 39This life is the sun at its height, real and warm and already turning, while the hereafter is the home where everything finally stays still.
- Ayah 40Evil is weighed exactly and repaid only with its like, while good is given without anyone counting.
- Ayah 41One man calls a nation to the high ground above the flood, while the nation calls him down into the Fire.
- Ayah 42They called him to gods no one could know; he called them to the Almighty, who still bends to cover whoever turns to Him.
- Ayah 43What they worshipped could not call and would not answer; everything, the believer included, was on its way back to Allah.
- Ayah 44Having said everything he could, threatened with death, he handed his whole case to Allah and stepped back, knowing he was seen.
- Ayah 45The man who handed his affair to Allah was shielded from every plot, while the trap Pharaoh's people had set closed round them instead.
- Ayah 46Pharaoh's people, long drowned, are set before the Fire each morning and evening; when the Hour comes, they enter its harshest depth.
- Ayah 47In the Fire, the followers turn on the leaders they obeyed and ask them to carry a share of it, and the leaders cannot.
- Ayah 48The arrogant, asked to carry their followers' share, can only admit that they are all in the Fire and that Allah has already judged.
- Ayah 49Having lost all hope in their leaders, the people of the Fire beg its keepers to ask their Lord for a single day's relief.
- Ayah 50The keepers ask one question, did the messengers not come with clear proofs, and the people of the Fire can only answer yes.
- Ayah 51Allah binds Himself with a double promise: He will help His messengers and the believers, in this life and on the Day the witnesses stand.
- Ayah 52On that Day the wrongdoers' excuses are worthless; what remains for them is distance from mercy and the worst of homes.
- Ayah 53Allah gave Musa the guidance and made the Children of Israel heirs of the Book, a gift that outlived Pharaoh and every throne.
- Ayah 54The Book given to Musa was guidance and a reminder, reaching the kernel of those whose minds were clear enough to receive it.
- Ayah 55Under pressure, the Prophet is given four things: patience, certainty in Allah's promise, seeking forgiveness, and glorifying his Lord at both ends of the…
- Ayah 56Behind arguments against Allah's signs made without proof lies a pride that never reaches its goal; the answer is refuge in the All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
- Ayah 57The One who made the heavens and earth can surely remake people, the lesser work; most simply never draw the conclusion.
- Ayah 58The blind and the seeing are not equal, nor the believer who does good and the one who harms, yet people rarely reflect on it.
- Ayah 59The Hour is certainly coming, with no room for unsettling doubt, yet most people neither believe in it nor prepare for it.
- Ayah 60Your Lord Himself says: call on Me and I will answer you; and the only ones shut out are those too proud to call.
- Ayah 61Allah made the night for your rest and the day bright for your work; His bounty has no equal, yet most people never give thanks.
- Ayah 62The Giver of night and day is Allah, your Lord, Creator of every thing, with no god but Him; so how are you being turned away?
- Ayah 63Those who made a habit of denying Allah's signs were turned away in just the same manner; the turning grew out of the denying.
- Ayah 64Allah settled the earth beneath you, pitched the sky above, shaped you beautifully and fed you good things; blessed is the Lord of the worlds.
- Ayah 65He is the Living, with no god but Him; so call on Him with pure devotion, and say: praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
- Ayah 66Clear proofs reached the Prophet, so he declares he will not worship what others call on, and gives himself over to the Lord of the worlds.
- Ayah 67From dust, a drop and a clinging clot, He brings you out, raises you to strength and then age, each life reaching its named term.
- Ayah 68He alone gives life and takes it; and when He settles a matter, He only says to it, 'Be', and it is.
- Ayah 69Look at those who argue against Allah's plain signs, and wonder: how are they being turned away, when everything points the other way?
- Ayah 70Those who called the Book a lie, and everything the messengers brought, will come to know; truth does not wait for their agreement.
- Ayah 71Those who denied will know, when collars are on their necks and chains drag them along, that what they rejected was true.
- Ayah 72Dragged through scalding water and then into the Fire, the deniers become the very fuel that keeps it burning.
- Ayah 73In the Fire, one question is put to them: where now are the partners you used to set up beside Allah?
- Ayah 74Asked where their gods are, they answer: they have strayed away from us; in truth, we were never calling on anything at all.
- Ayah 75Their punishment is traced to joy taken on earth in what had no right to bring joy, and a swagger that would not stay still.
- Ayah 76Enter the gates of Hell, to remain there: how wretched a lodging for those too proud for the truth.
- Ayah 77Be patient: Allah's promise is true; whether the Prophet sees part of it in his lifetime or not, every soul returns to Allah.
- Ayah 78Many messengers came before, named and unnamed; none brought a sign but by Allah's leave, and when His command comes, falsehood loses everything.
- Ayah 79Allah made livestock for you: some to ride, some to eat; the animals that carried human life for millennia were His gift, not our invention.
- Ayah 80Animals bring countless benefits and carry the needs of your hearts to distant places; on them and on ships, you are carried.
- Ayah 81Allah keeps showing you His signs; so which one of them, exactly, will you deny?
- Ayah 82Earlier nations were more numerous, stronger and left greater marks on the earth, yet everything they earned could not save them; travel, and look.
- Ayah 83Offered clear proofs, they delighted in the 'knowledge' they already had; then the very thing they mocked closed round them.
- Ayah 84Only when they saw Allah's might did they say the words of faith, renouncing their false gods: the right words, spoken too late.
- Ayah 85Faith forced by the sight of punishment did not help them; that is Allah's settled way with His servants, and there the disbelievers lost.
