تَنزِيلُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَكِيمِ

Essence

The surah opens and closes on the same two names, and everyone's pride is set between them.

A reflection

Two names at the door, the same two at the exit

Read the first full sentence of this surah, then turn to its last. It opens: the sending down of the Book is from Allah, al-ʿAzīz, al-Ḥakīm, the Almighty, the Wise. It closes: 'His is all grandeur in the heavens and the earth, and He is the Almighty, the Wise' (45:37). The same two names stand at the door and at the exit.

Now look at what sits between them. A man who hears the ayat recited and then 'persists in arrogance, as if he had not heard them' (45:8). People who take a desire as their god (45:23). A crowd told on the Last Day, 'you were arrogant' (45:31). The surah gathers human pride into one room, and frames the room with His might and His wisdom.

Picture a conference speaker who asks for his name to be printed larger than the event's title. It is a small vanity, and most of us have a version. The job title we let slip early. The ego that needs the last word. This ayah puts all of it in proportion. The only greatness that frames everything is not ours.

Is it vain for Allah to name Himself this way? One commentary reads the two names as evidence, not decoration. Might shows He is able to do anything possible; wisdom shows He knows everything and needs nothing. Whoever is like that does nothing pointless, so His Book can be trusted. He is free of need (35:15). The names are told to us for our sake: so we know whose words these are.
