Al-Jathiyah · Makki · ayah 26 of 37

Al-Jathiyah 45:26

قُلِ ٱللَّهُ يُحْيِيكُمْ ثُمَّ يُمِيتُكُمْ ثُمَّ يَجْمَعُكُمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

“Say, "Allāh causes you to live, then causes you to die; then He will assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt, but most of the people do not know."”

Essence

Your whole biography fits in one sentence, and in every clause of it Allah, not you, is the one acting.

A reflection

Rewriting the professional profile

Read the ayah's three verbs slowly. Allah gives you life. Then He causes you to die. Then He gathers you. Your birth, your death and your resurrection: a complete biography in nine Arabic words. And in every clause the subject is Allah. You are the object of all three.

One classical commentator adds a pointed note. He causes you to die at the end of your appointed term, as the evidence shows, not time, as you claim. The previous ayah's speakers had said that only time destroys us. This ayah takes the verb away from time and gives it back to its true Subject.

Picture a man in his forties updating his professional profile online. Every sentence begins with 'I'. I founded. I led. I grew revenue. I built a team. He calls himself self-made in the summary. It is not dishonest; he did work hard. But read it next to this ayah and it looks oddly incomplete. He did not choose to be born. He will not choose the day he dies. He will not be the one who raises himself.

That is what this ayah does to pride. It does not deny our effort. It places it inside a larger sentence, whose main verbs belong to Someone else. The ego writes itself as the subject of everything. The Quran quietly corrects the grammar.

Does Allah need us to acknowledge this? No. He is free of need of all the worlds (29:6). The correction is for us. A person who knows who gave him life, who will take it and who will gather him carries a lighter weight. He is not holding up his own existence.

Try rewriting your own summary in the ayah's grammar. Allah gave me... Allah will...
