Al-Jathiyah · Makki · ayah 27 of 37

Al-Jathiyah 45:27

“And to Allāh belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And the Day the Hour appears - that Day the falsifiers will lose.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Everything already belongs to Allah; when the Hour stands, the losers are those who spent their capital on what was never real.

A reflection

Guests who forgot they were guests

'To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth.' One narration-based commentator draws out what this meant to the first hearers. Everything you take as a partner to Allah, every god and idol you worship besides Him, sits inside His dominion and under His rule. How can a thing He owns be His partner? How can you worship it and leave the worship of the One who owns both you and it?

Picture a businessman who books the top suite of a grand hotel for a week. By the third day he is rearranging the furniture and ordering the staff about. He tells other guests where they may sit in the lounge. He talks about 'my floor'. On the seventh morning the receptionist smiles politely, takes back his key card and hands it to the next guest.

The ego is always booking the suite and forgetting the checkout. My house, my company, my body, my time. This ayah does not deny that we use these things. It denies that we own them in the way we pretend. The heavens and the earth, and everything in them including us, already belong to Someone. We are guests, however long the stay.

There is freedom in that. A guest does not have to defend the building against every storm or keep it standing for ever. He is asked only to behave well while he is there and to leave the room as he should.

A sceptic might hear in this repeated claim of ownership a need for recognition. It is the reverse. The dominion is already His whether we acknowledge it or not. Saying so changes nothing for Him; He is free of need (35:15). It changes everything for the guest who finally remembers whose house he is in.
