Al-Jathiyah 45:33
وَبَدَا لَهُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتُ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ
“And the evil consequences of what they did will appear to them, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule.”

Essence
What was dressed up comes into plain view, and the joke they told about the warning closes round them like their own trap.
A reflection
Open desert, where nothing is screened
Badā, it appeared, comes from a root the lexicons tie to open country. Desert people were called badw because they lived in the open, with no village buildings to screen them. A near-synonym lexicon adds that this kind of appearing happens without intent, the way lightning appears, or dawn. The image is established.
One narration-based commentator says when it happens. Their ugly deeds appeared to them when they read their records, copied by the recording angels in the world.
Picture a long beach after a spring tide goes out further than usual. Where the sea had covered everything, the sand now shows what was thrown off the pier over months: a bicycle frame, bottles, a shopping trolley. Nobody chose to reveal them. The water simply drew back, and there they were, in plain view.
That is the quiet horror of this ayah. Nothing is dragged into the light by force. The covering is simply removed, and what was always there can be seen.
For anyone with a hidden fault, this is reason to deal with it while the tide is still in. Repentance can take things off the sand before the sea goes out.
