Al-Jathiyah 45:35

“That is because you took the verses of Allāh in ridicule, and worldly life deluded you." So that Day they will not be removed from it, nor will they be asked to appease [Allāh].”

Essence

They poured out their water for a mirage; now the doorstep back into favour, open all their lives, is closed.

A reflection

Pouring out the water for a mirage

'And the life of this world deceived you.' The word for deceived, gharra, carries several pictures in the lexicons. The sharpest belongs to the desert traveller. He sees a mirage, takes it for water, pours out what he is carrying, and dies of thirst. That, says one classical distinction, is ghurūr. The lexicon records this as an explanation rather than the root's single meaning, but the image is vivid and well attested.

Notice what the traveller loses. Not only the water he never reaches. The water he already had.

One commentator explains how this worked on the people in the ayah. The world deceived them with its falsehoods and ornaments, so they thought there was nothing beyond it, and no resurrection. Another says: they preferred it over working for what would save them.

Picture a young couple in their late twenties who stop paying into their pensions. The money goes on the holidays and dinners that fill their social media. Their friends admire the photographs. They feel they are living well. At fifty they sit down with a financial adviser and realise that what they poured out could not be poured back. They had real water. They spent it walking towards a shimmer.

The ayah is not saying the world is worthless. It is saying the world becomes a mirage when it is mistaken for the whole. Its beauty is real; its promise of being enough is not.

The practical test is the traveller's: what am I pouring out to reach what I see on the horizon? Time with my children, my prayer, my health, my honesty? If the answer is something I cannot get back, I should look very carefully at whether the water ahead is real.

Hold on to the water in your hand.
