Al-Jathiyah 45:4

وَفِى خَلْقِكُمْ وَمَا يَبُثُّ مِن دَآبَّةٍ ءَايَـٰتٌ لِّقَوْمٍ يُوقِنُونَ

“And in the creation of yourselves and what He disperses of moving creatures are signs for people who are certain [in faith].”

Essence

The nearest sign to you is the body you are reading with, and it was measured out before you ever saw it.

A reflection

Measured before the first cut

The word for creating, khalq, began with a craftsman. The lexicons picture a leatherworker with a hide spread out before him. Before a single cut he measures it: this much for a water-skin, this much for a boot. That measuring is the first meaning of the word. From measuring came making: bringing a thing into being to a measure.

Now the ayah turns that word on you: in your creation. The short commentaries trace the stages. A drop, then a clinging clot, then a lump of flesh, until it became a human being. Each of you was measured before you were cut.

Think about what that does to pride. A man stands in front of a gym mirror, flexing, filming his progress for an audience. He has worked hard, and the effort is real. But he did not choose the length of his bones. He did not set the number of his vertebrae or the colour of his eyes. He did not shape the heart pumping under the muscle he admires. The thing he is proud of is built on a frame he never designed. The face we curate, the height we resent, the cleverness we show off: every one was measured by Someone else.

That realisation can sting. It can also be the most relieving thing you hear all week. If you did not design yourself, you do not have to justify every part of yourself to the world either. The measure was set with wisdom. Your job is to live well inside it, not to win an argument about it.

Why does Allah keep telling us that He made us? Not because He needs the credit. Sahih Muslim records a hadith qudsi. In it Allah says: My servants, you can never reach the point of harming Me, nor of benefiting Me. Our gratitude adds nothing to Him. The ayah says these signs are 'for a people who are certain'. They are pointed out for our sake, so we can stop pretending we are self-made.

One hide, measured with care. Then the cut. Then you.
