Al-Jathiyah · Makki · ayah 7 of 37
Al-Jathiyah 45:7
وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِيمٍ
“Woe to every sinful liar”
Saheeh International
Essence
Four words of warning, aimed not at someone who once lied, but at one who turns truth upside down for a living.
A reflection
The man who bought stories to drown out the Quran
Several classical commentaries record who this ayah was first understood to describe. One name they give is al-Naḍr ibn al-Ḥārith. He used to buy the stories of the Persians, they report, and keep people busy with them so they would not listen to the Quran. Other names are given too, and the commentators agree the ayah is general. 'Every' sinful liar is included, and the one it first came down about is simply the first in line.
Think about what al-Naḍr was doing. He did not mainly argue. He distracted. The Quran was being recited in Makkah, and people were stopping to listen. So he went abroad, brought back the entertainment of an empire, and set up his own show. If you cannot refute the message, drown it out.
This is not ancient history. Picture a sixteen-year-old who opens a Quran app at night, meaning to read one page. Forty seconds later a notification arrives: a new video from a creator who posts twelve times a day. She taps it. An hour later the Quran app is still open in the background, on the first ayah. Nobody argued her out of reading. Someone simply offered her something louder.
Much of the modern attention economy runs on al-Naḍr's method. Stories, endlessly, so that nobody sits in silence long enough to hear anything that might change them.
There is a strategic lesson here for anyone who carries a message. The Prophet ﷺ did not answer al-Naḍr by buying better stories. He kept reciting. The signal outlasted the noise. Truth does not need to win a volume contest; it needs to keep being said.
And there is a personal lesson. Notice who, in your own life, profits from your distraction. The question is not whether entertainment is allowed. The question is whether it has been bought, by someone, to keep you from listening.
Tonight, silence one notification before you open the Book.
