Al-Mulk 67:16
ءَأَمِنتُم مَّن فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ أَن يَخْسِفَ بِكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ فَإِذَا هِىَ تَمُورُ
“Do you feel secure that He who is above[1718] would not cause the earth to swallow you and suddenly it would sway?[1719]”

Essence
The earth was handed to you tamed and walkable one breath earlier; now you are asked whether you are sure it will hold.
A reflection
The floor nobody audits
There are villages in the old coalfields that sit on top of galleries emptied a century ago and then forgotten. Every so often a surveyor goes down with a plan nobody has checked since the pit closed. He is not looking for anything dramatic. He is looking for the gap between what the maps say is under the street and what is actually under it. The residents walk the same pavement every morning without a thought, because the ground is the one thing nobody audits.
That is the nerve this question goes for. It does not ask whether you believe in God. It asks whether you feel safe, and it asks it about the surface you are standing on while you read. Everything you have built rests on a floor you did not lay. Every plan with a date on it, every opinion about your competence, sits on a surface you cannot inspect and do not hold still.
Pride is largely a trick of attention. It works by keeping your eyes on the part of the picture you contributed. The work you won, the home you paid for, the reputation you tend. None of that is nothing. It is simply standing on something, and the something was never yours. A man can be vain about the furniture while the floor belongs to someone else.
The question also names where the answer comes from, the One above. Commentators discussed that expression at length and read it in several ways. It is safer to take the words as they are given and leave the manner of it to Him. What the readings share is plain enough: His command and His power reach you from above, not from your own level. The ground is not neutral territory He happens to be visiting. It is His, it is obedient, and the obedience could run the other way without notice.
