Al-Haqqah 69:14

وَحُمِلَتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَٱلْجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةً وَٰحِدَةً

“And the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow [i.e., stroke] -”

Saheeh International

Essence

The mountains, humanity's oldest image of what cannot be moved, are lifted and flattened as easily as a hand smooths a sheet.

A reflection

Levelled like a grave, like a mountain once already was

Dakk is a specific, physical kind of ending: beating a thing until it lies flat and level with the ground around it. The lexicons use it for a demolished wall, a crushed mountain, and, strikingly, for soil tamped firmly down over a grave. A she-camel born without a hump was dakkāʾ, named for the same flatness. Nothing in this root describes gentle erosion. It describes a deliberate pounding until every raised feature is gone.

This ayah is not the first time that exact word appears in the Quran. When Musa (as) asked to see his Lord directly, he was told to watch a mountain instead: if it held its place, he would see Him. The instant his Lord's light appeared to it, the mountain "became dakkan", crushed level, and Musa fell unconscious at the sight (7:143). One mountain, one moment, one witness, given as a preview of exactly what this ayah now describes for every mountain on earth at once.

That earlier scene is worth carrying into this one. What flattened Sinai was not a natural disaster, an earthquake or erosion over centuries. It was the mountain meeting something of its Lord directly, a bare instant of that encounter being more than solid rock could bear. If one mountain could not survive a glimpse, there is no reading of this ayah left that imagines the mountains and the earth being destroyed here by ordinary force. They are undone, as Sinai already was, simply by what they are finally being brought to meet.

The same word used for a grave being tamped shut is used for the whole earth. The world's burial, when it comes, will look exactly like the ordinary one, only complete.
