Al-Haqqah · Makki · ayah 36 of 52
Al-Haqqah 69:36
وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ
“Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds;”
Saheeh International
Essence
The one offering of food he receives is the filth washed from wounds, nourishment turned completely inside out.
A reflection
The word for washing clean, used for what is washed off
Ghislīn grows from the same root as ghusl, washing, the act of pouring water over something until the dirt runs off with it. The word named here is that runoff itself: not the cleansing, but what the cleansing removes, carrying every trace of what it has washed away.
The commentaries describe it plainly as the discharge of the Fire's people, blood and pus flowing from wounds and burns, the very thing an ordinary washing would be meant to remove and carry safely away. Here it is not removed. It is served.
That inversion is exact rather than accidental. A word built on the idea of being cleansed becomes, in this single use, the name for what a person is forced to consume. Nothing about food, something taken in to nourish and sustain life, survives the description. What goes in here does the opposite of everything food and washing are for: it does not clean, and it does not feed.
The lexicons do not soften this, and a careful reader should not soften it either. Section 1's own rule applies here as much as anywhere: if a scene like this is approached only through abstraction, visceral details waved past quickly out of discomfort, its actual weight is lost along with the discomfort. The ayah does not ask to be admired for its imagery. It asks to be felt as what it is: everything that should nourish, turned completely against the one receiving it.
