Nuh 71:19

وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ بِسَاطًا

“And Allāh has made for you the earth an expanse”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah did not just place the earth beneath you; He spread it out like a host laying down a carpet for a guest who has not yet arrived.

A reflection

The same word for a carpet and for open-handed provision

Bisāṭ is a spread-out surface, a carpet unrolled and laid flat so that whoever sits on it is comfortable. Nuh uses it for the entire earth: not merely 'ground that exists', but ground deliberately laid out, levelled, made fit to sit, walk and build on — the same care a host takes unrolling a carpet before a guest arrives, except the guest here is every human being who has ever lived.

The same root carries a second sense worth holding alongside the first. The Quran elsewhere describes Allah as the One who yabsuṭu al-rizq, who 'spreads out' provision for whoever He wills (2:245, among other places) — the identical verb-family used here for the earth itself. The earth being 'spread' and provision being 'spread' are not two coincidences sharing a word by accident; the commentators and lexicons treat basṭ as one consistent image of generous, open extension, whether it is land unrolled beneath your feet or sustenance extended into your hand.

So the ground itself is already a form of that generosity, before a single harvest has come in or a single wage has been paid. You were given somewhere to stand before you were given anything to stand for. The spreading came first.

Next time you use the word 'spread' casually — a spread of food at a gathering, spreading a rumour, feeling spread thin — notice how much of the Quran's vocabulary for generosity and ease shares exactly this image: something unrolled, opened out, made available to more than one person at once.
