Al-Jinn 72:8

وَأَنَّا لَمَسْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ فَوَجَدْنَـٰهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَسًا شَدِيدًا وَشُهُبًا

“And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The jinn reached for the sky as always and found it filled to the brim with stern watchmen: His decree is not for overhearing.

A reflection

The council no one overhears

A junior analyst has taken to lingering by the boardroom door. If he times his coffee right, he catches fragments: a name, a number, the word 'restructure'. For a moment he feels like an insider. He never once hears a whole sentence.

The jinn had been that analyst for ages. Their verb is lamasnā: we felt for the sky, groped towards it, as a hand feels in the dark. They reached for their old seats near heaven's edge, as they always had. And they found it muliʾat, filled. The word is used of a vessel filled to the brim. Two classical commentators note that this was the new thing. Not that guards existed, but that every gap was now full. Before, some seats had stood unwatched. Now none did.

What were they trying to overhear? A hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari draws the scene above them. When Allah decrees a matter in heaven, the angels beat their wings in submission to His word. The sound is like a chain dragged over smooth rock. When the terror lifts from their hearts, they ask one another what their Lord has said. The truth, comes the answer, and He is the Most High, the Most Great. Meanwhile, below, the eavesdroppers stand one above another, straining for a fragment.

Set the two pictures side by side. The angels, nearest to the decree, are overwhelmed by it. The thieves, furthest away, are trying to sell it. That is a portrait of the ego's place. We want to be in the know, to have the inside line on what is coming. The ayah shows us the council chamber, and it is no place for leaks. It is a place where even the angels fall silent. The proper response is humility, not curiosity.

Someone may ask why an all-powerful God would need guards. He does not, for His own sake. One commentator explains what the guarding protected. It kept the devils from stealing any of the Quran and passing it to soothsayers. Otherwise truth and falsehood would have been mixed beyond telling apart. That, he says, was His kindness to His creation and His mercy to His servants. The watchmen stand there for us, not for Him.
