Al-Muddaththir 74:43
قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ
“They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,”
Saheeh International
Essence
The first thread named: we were not of those who pray, not an occasional lapse, but never once having been part of that company at all.
A reflection
The horse that runs close behind
Ṣalāh is, at its root, calling on Allah and asking, the whole rite built around that calling in word, posture and movement. The lexicons add a second, physical picture worth holding alongside it: in a horse race, the muṣallī was the second horse, the one whose head reaches the leader's flank, running close enough behind to nearly touch the one out in front.
That image reframes what al-muṣallīn, those who pray, are actually doing. Prayer is not a separate activity bolted onto an otherwise self-directed life. It is the posture of staying close behind the Leader, five times a day, rather than running your own race on your own line, out ahead or off to the side, with Allah somewhere far behind you rather than just in front.
The confession in this ayah is, read this way, not primarily about missed ritual. It is an admission of having run the whole race alone, never once positioning themselves close enough behind Allah's own lead for His direction to actually shape where they were going. A life that never prays is not simply a life missing a nice habit. It is a race run with no leader in view at all.
Allah needs no one running close behind Him; He loses nothing by anyone's distance. The muṣallī's closeness is entirely for the muṣallī, the only runner who actually benefits from staying near enough to be led rather than merely, exhaustingly, finding the way alone.
There is something freeing in that image too. A horse running its own race alone, with no leader to measure itself against, has nothing steady to orient its pace by at all. The second horse, head at the leader's flank, is not straining in isolation; it is running within a rhythm set by someone further ahead who already knows the course. That is a kinder way to run a whole life than entirely alone.
