Al-Muddaththir 74:42

مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ

“[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"”

Saheeh International

Essence

What threaded you into Saqar: not a vague question about bad luck, but a precise one, about the exact path a life was drawn through.

A reflection

Not drifted in, threaded through

Salaka pictures one thing passing deliberately into and through another: a thread drawn through the eye of a needle, a hand slipped into the opening of a garment, a spear driven straight in. The same verb describes a traveller walking a specific road, not wandering vaguely across open country. The question the companions of the right ask is not, loosely, 'how did this happen to you'. It is closer to 'what thread was pulled, precisely, to draw you through, all the way in'.

This matters because it refuses a very tempting kind of vagueness. People who end up somewhere terrible in life rarely describe it, honestly, as a single sudden event. It is usually closer to a thread, pulled steadily, through one choice after another, each individually small enough to barely notice, until the whole garment has been drawn through the needle's eye and there is no obvious moment to point back to.

A man who ends up estranged from his entire family by sixty did not arrive there through one dramatic rupture. He arrived through a thread of missed calls returned later and later, slights never quite addressed, a pattern of small withdrawals each too minor, on its own, to seem worth fixing, stitched together over three decades into something that finally cannot be undone with one phone call.

The question mā salakakum fī saqar asks exactly this, with real precision: not what happened to you, but what thread, pulled steadily by your own hand, actually drew you all the way through.

It is worth noticing that a thread pulled gently, one stitch at a time, is also a thread that could have been cut at almost any single point along the way. The ayah's precision is not only diagnostic. It quietly insists that the whole slow process, however far it travelled, was never beyond stopping until the very last stitch had actually been drawn through.
