وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
“And we used to deny the Day of Recompense”
Saheeh International
Essence
The fourth thread, the root of the other three: we used to deny the Day of Repayment, the day everything given out finally comes back in kind.
A reflection
A charge that pulled up short
Kadhib, lying, has a strikingly physical origin: a warrior who charged towards his opponent and then pulled up before the blow landed was said to have kadhaba, lied. The charge looked committed. It never actually arrived. A lie, at its root, is not simply a false statement; it is any approach that stops short of reaching what it appeared to be heading towards.
Nukadhdhibu bi-yawm al-dīn, we used to deny the Day of Repayment, carries exactly this physical shape. It does not describe people who carefully reasoned their way to atheism through argument. It describes a charge that pulled up short: living as though the Day were real enough to mention, perhaps, in an unguarded moment, while never once letting the charge connect, never once letting belief in a real reckoning actually reach as far as changing a single choice.
A man who tells his children, sincerely, that honesty always matters, while quietly adjusting his own expense reports every month because nobody checks closely, is charging towards a value he never lets himself actually reach. The charge looks real from a distance. It has, functionally, already pulled up short of its target.
This is the root all three earlier confessions were built from. Prayer abandoned, the needy unfed, cruel talk joined in: each one only makes sense in a life where the Day of Repayment was never allowed to actually arrive and change anything, a charge that looked, for years, like belief, and never once landed as one.
There is a strange mercy even in this precise diagnosis. A charge that pulled up short, rather than one that was never attempted at all, still implies some real motion in the right direction, however incomplete. The question this root leaves open for anyone still mid-charge is not whether belief was ever present, but whether it will finally be allowed to land before the approach runs out of road entirely.
