Al-Muddaththir · Makki · ayah 48 of 56
Al-Muddaththir 74:48
فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ
“So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.”
Saheeh International
Essence
No one can stand beside them as their second now: a life spent wading in company ends in the one place company could no longer reach them.
A reflection
Left unpaired
Shafāʿa, intercession, is built on pairing: a ewe becomes shāfiʿ when her lamb walks beside her, making the single into a pair. An intercessor, in exactly this sense, is someone who stands beside another person, joining them as a second voice, asking on their behalf before someone with the power to grant it. To have an intercessor is to stop being witr, alone and odd-numbered, and become shafʿ, paired, accompanied.
This ayah states plainly that this particular door is shut for them. No intercession benefits them, which means, read through the word's own root, that they are left entirely witr: unpaired, uncompanioned, facing the reckoning with no one able or willing to stand beside them as their second.
The cruelty of this is sharper set against 74:45, two ayat before this whole dialogue began. They spent their lives wading with others, never once alone in the churn of mockery and idle talk, always paired with company that made the wrongdoing feel shared and survivable. Now, at the one moment pairing could have actually mattered, the company that was always available for wrongdoing has entirely disappeared.
This is the ayah's real sting: not merely that help was refused, but that a lifetime of never standing alone ends in the single situation where standing alone is the only option left.
There is a quiet precision in the root itself that makes this worse rather than better. Pairing was never rare or difficult for them; it was the one thing they practised constantly, every time company made a cruelty feel shared and bearable. The skill they had spent a lifetime perfecting turns out to be exactly the one skill that cannot be exercised here, in the one place its absence actually costs something.
