Al-Muddaththir · Makki · ayah 56 of 56
Al-Muddaththir 74:56
وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ
“And they will not remember except that Allāh wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness.”
Saheeh International
Essence
They will not remember unless Allah wills it: He alone is worthy of the shield raised towards Him, and worthy to be the shield raised over us.
A reflection
Worthy of the shield, and worthy to be one
Taqwā pictures a shield raised between a person and a blow: a horse with a sore hoof stepping carefully on hard ground, guarding what could be hurt. Maghfira, forgiveness, pictures covering: the mighfar, the mail hood worn under a helmet, falling over the neck to protect it. Both words this ayah closes on are built from the same instinct, something raised between harm and what it would otherwise reach.
The surah's very last line holds these together: Allah is ahlu al-taqwā, worthy that a shield be raised towards Him, carefully, reverently, the way you would step around anything genuinely capable of consequence, and ahlu al-maghfirah, worthy to be the covering raised over everyone who fell short of that care. One is what we owe Him. The other is what He freely gives.
A reader who has sat through this whole surah's weight, the fire, the confession, the fleeing donkeys, the diagnosis of a fear aimed entirely at the wrong wall, could easily close it believing only the first half survived to the end. This ayah insists on both halves in a single breath. The same greatness that deserves real, careful reverence is the greatness generous enough to cover whoever approaches it honestly.
Nothing about Him needs our carefulness to remain great, and nothing about our failures can outrun a covering this total. What shrinks, reading this ayah properly, is not Him. It is any pride that still imagined it needed to earn, rather than simply receive, what was always this freely offered.
There is a specific relief folded into closing a whole surah on this exact pairing. A warning this serious could easily have ended on dread alone, leaving a reader with nothing to do but brace. Ending instead on both halves together lets the fear do its real, intended work, reorienting rather than crushing, because it arrives in the very same breath as the covering that makes a changed direction actually worth attempting.
