An-Nazi'at 79:14

فَإِذَا هُم بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ

“And suddenly they will be [alert] upon the earth's surface.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Those who slept inside the earth suddenly stand on its open, wakeful face, where no one owns a single landmark.

A reflection

The plain that never sleeps

Drive across a desert road at midday and the tarmac ahead seems to turn to water. A silver pool shimmers on the horizon, always a mile away. It never dries and never arrives. The heat keeps it moving all day, as if the land itself were restless.

The first hearers had a name for that kind of ground: al-sāhira, the wakeful one. The root s-h-r is sleeplessness, sahar, lying awake through the night. The Arabs called the open desert and the face of the earth al-sāhira. The sources give several reasons, and the lexicons record them. One is that creatures sleep and wake on it; it never rests. Another is that mirage runs across it like water. A spring that flowed day and night was called 'wakeful', and a dry one 'sleeping'. A third is that whoever crosses it cannot sleep, for fear of dying there. The image is established.

Now put the ayah back together. It will be but one shout, and at once they are on al-sāhira. Those who lay in the earth, in the long sleep of the grave, are suddenly standing on its surface. One scholar describes it simply: alive on the face of the earth after being dead in its belly.

The irony is deliberate and precise. They slept inside the earth. They wake on the land called Wakeful. And one classical reflection adds a sharper edge. The ground is called wakeful, he suggests, because the fear on it drives all sleep away from the people standing there. Nobody dozes on that plain.

Most of us are experts at a kind of waking sleep. We move through days on autopilot, half attending to the things that matter. The deniers in this passage slept through every warning until the shout woke them. By then the plain was already under their feet.

There is a gentler invitation here too. The believer is asked to be wakeful now, in small ways, while waking is still a choice.

What would it mean to be fully awake for one hour of tomorrow?
