Al-A'la 87:4

وَٱلَّذِىٓ أَخْرَجَ ٱلْمَرْعَىٰ

“And who brings out the pasture”

Saheeh International

Essence

He brings out every green field that feeds a flock, so the meal you are proud to provide began as grass you never planted.

A reflection

The name missing from the menu

The menu in a smart restaurant reads like a short essay. 'Fell-bred lamb, grass-fed on the high pastures above the village.' The farm is named. The breed is named. The chef's name is printed at the top. Nobody thinks to name the grass, which did most of the work, or the One who brought it out.

Wa-lladhī akhraja al-marʿā: and who brought out the pasture. For the first hearers, this was not scenery. A green valley meant milk, meat, wool and a journey that could be made. A dry year meant dead camels and hungry children. Everyone knew how little they could do to make it green.

Akhraja is a verb of coming out. The root pictures something leaving the place where it was settled. Fruit comes out of its sheath (41:47); a crowd goes out on a festival day. The Quran uses the same word for the Day people come out of their graves (50:42). The shoot pushing out of cold soil is a small rehearsal of that morning.

An early commentator described the pasture as people saw it: green, yellow, red and white. Another commentary adds the point that mattered most in Makkah. It is He who brings out the grass, not the idols they served.

We have lost the first hearers' fear and wonder. Our food comes wrapped and priced. It is easy to feel that we feed our families, and to be proud of it. We do work for it, and the work is real. But trace any meal back, and at the end of every chain stands a green shoot that no worker made.

Someone may ask why Allah keeps reminding us that He feeds us. Is He fishing for thanks? He needs nothing: 'I want no provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me' (51:57). The reminder is not for Him. It punctures the proudest sentence a provider can say: I put this food on the table. The truer sentence is humbler. I carried it. Someone else brought it out.
