Ash-Shams 91:6

وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا

“And [by] the earth and He who spread it”

Saheeh International

Essence

The dry ground beneath you was spread out and held clear of the sea by Another; you live on it as a guest.

A reflection

Dry ground is water held back

Ṭaḥā is to spread wide, like daḥā. The Arabs called a huge tent pitched wide maṭḥuwwa. A plant that crept flat across the ground was maṭḥiyya. Most commentators read the ayah as: by the earth, and the One who spread it out on every side.

A classical writer on this oath points to something we never think about. Spreading the earth, he says, meant the water drawing back from it. By the ordinary run of things, water should cover it. Yet part of it stands out of the sea. And it is this part, not some other, though every side of a sphere is alike. Those who explained everything by nature, he says, were left saying that the Maker's care required it. Then, he answers, that care must belong to One who knows and chooses.

Picture a house on a river plain in a wet February. Its owner checks the water-level app every hour. He moves the photographs upstairs and lays towels along the door. For three days, every inch of dry floor feels like a gift that could be withdrawn.

Most of us live as if the ground were simply ours. We buy it, fence it, build on it and boast of the view. We forget that dry land is the sea held back, every day, by the One who spread it.

Is Allah drawing attention to this for His own sake? 'Whoever strives, strives only for himself. Allah is Free of need of all the worlds' (29:6). The reminder is for the one standing on the floor, not the One who laid it.

So walk on the ground today like a guest who has noticed the house. Humble, grateful, and a little amazed that the water stays where it is told.
